KERALA KADALA CURRY

Kadala Curry is a very popular and traditional Kerala style coconut based Chickpea Curry especially served with Kerala style Puttu.[Puttu is a rice flour dish steamed along with Coconut grating in a cylindrical mould). Puttu and Kerala Kadala Curry is a great combination and is a popular breakfast in Kerala. Kerala Kadala Curry also goes well as a side dish with Idiyappam, Appam, Aapam, Chapathi, Phulkas, Rice etc.

The following ingredients are needed to prepare Kerala Kadala Curry/Kerala Puttu Curry.

Ingredients:-


Chickpeas.   -1cup
Green chilly. -3
Ginger.         -1tsp (chopped)



For Coconut Masala paste:-


Oil.                      -1tsp
Coriander seeds. -1tbsp
Red chilly.            - 4
Coconut grated.   -1/2 Coconut. 



For Seasoning:-

Coconut oil /Oil.-2tsp
Mustard seeds. -1tsp
Curry leaves.    -1 spring
Onion                -1 big chopped lengthwise. Or shallots.   -10 chopped



Method:-

Wash and half slit Green Chillies and keep aside.

Peel, wash and chop Ginger into thin lengthy pieces and keep aside.

Peel and chop Onion or Shallots  into thin lengthy pieces and keep aside.

Wash and soak the Chickpeas in water for 8 hours or overnight.Pressure cook the soaked Chickpeas with half slit Green chillies and chopped Ginger adding 2 cup of Water for 5 whistles.

Roast dry Red Chillies and Coriander seeds in little oil.Add the grated Coconut and roast till golden colour and grind the roasted items to a fine paste.Keep aside the ground Coconut masala paste.



Method:-

Transfer the pressure cooked Chickpeas in a cooking vessel along with cooked Water and boil well.Cover the vessel with a lid and cook for 2 minutes.

Add the ground Coconut Masala paste and mix well with the cooked Chickpeas in the cooking vessel.Add required Water and Salt and boil for 5 minutes and switch off the flame.

Heat 2tsp Coconut oil or any cooking Oil in a pan and splutter Mustard seeds and saute well.

Add Curry leaves and saute for a minute.

Add the chopped Shallots or chopped Onion and fry well till the Shallots or Onion becomes translucent and change to pink reddish in colour.

Switch off the flame and add the above seasoning into the Curry in the cooking vessel and mix well.

A tasty and yummy Kerala Kadala Curry(Kerala Puttu Curry) is ready to serve as a side dish for Puttu, Idiyappam, Appam, Aappam,Chapathi or Rice.
