CHONYA UPKARI / Black Chana Masala Curry/ Kadala Masala Curry


Whole Bengal gram/Black Chana is called Chono in Konkani and Kadala in Malayalam.Chonya Upkari is a tasty yummy and lip smacking Chana Masala Curry /Kadala Curry adding spicy Masala powder and other spices.There are various versions of Chonya Upkeri/  BlackChana Curry/Kadala Curry.

The following ingredients are needed to prepare this tasty and delicious Chonya Upkari/ Chana Masala Curry.


Ingredients:-

Black Chana.            - 1cup soaked
Coconut oil /Oil         -1tbsp
Mustard seeds.         -1tsp
Urad dal.                   -1tsp
Jeera/Cumin seeds.  -1tsp
Curry leaves.             -1spring
Red chilly powder.     -1tsp
Turmeric powder.       -1/4tsp
Salt.                           -to taste
Coriander leaves.      -few finely chopped



For grinding coarse Masala powder :-


Coriander seeds.        -1tsp
Whole Pepper Corn.   -10
Jeera /Cumin seeds.   -1tsp 




Instructions:-

Wash and soak 1 cup Black Chana for 8 hours .Pressure cook for 4 whistles or till soft.Keep aside.

In a pan dry roast dry Coriander seeds, Black Pepper corn and Jeera till a nice aroma comes.
When cooled grind them to a little coarse Powder.Keep aside.

Clean, wash and finely chop few Coriander leaves. Keep aside.



Method:-

Heat 1tbsp Coconut oil in a pan and splutter 1tsp Mustard seeds.


Add 1tsp Urad dal and saute well till Urad dal starts to change it's colour. 

Add 1tsp Jeera, 1spring Curry leaves and saute well.

Lower the flame and add 1tsp Red chilly powder, 1/4tsp Turmeric powder and saute well.

Add the cooked Chana along with little cooked Water and mix well.

Add Salt and mix well.Cover the pan with a lid and cook for 5 minutes.Saute in between.

Now add the ground coarse Masala powder and mix well with the cooked Chana in the pan.

Add 2tbsp Coconut grating and mix well till the Water completely absorbs and the ground Masala powder and the Coconut grating coated well with the cooked Chana.

Switch off the flame and add finely chopped Coriander leaves.

A tasty Chonya Upkeri is ready to serve as a side dish with Rice, Upma or with tea, coffee.
