Rontosse & Dali Thoy is a traditional and popular Konkani dish.This is a very tasty, delicious and good combination and a special dish prepared on the Holi celebration day in almost all the GSB homes in Kochi. Rontose and Dali Thoy / Rice Flour Puri with Dal Potato Curry recipe is given below with step by step pictures. Rontose is a deep fried rice puri made with rice flour and Dali thoy is a dal potato curry made with toor dal and potato with mustard seasoning. Rontose and dali thoy can be served for breakfast or dinner.
Holi celebration is called "Ukkuli" in Kochi Konkani and the main function is "Foddho Lassap" in Kochi Konkani. A statue of Foddho / Boddho / Devil is made with clothes filled with cotton and it is burned on Ukkuli celeberation day. Both adults and children equally participate in this Ukkuli celebration.They enjoy this festival by spraying and applying colour powders on each other.
There is a small procession with Foddho / Devil and the children enjoy the celebration with music and band.The end of the celebration is the Foddho lassap / Boddha lassap/ burning of the Devil. Kochi GSB People gather together to watch the burning of devil /foddho lassap. At the end water filled with tur meric powder or coloured water is poured or sprayed on the people to remove all the evils. The following ingredients are needed to prepare Rontose and Dali Thoy / Rice Flour Puri with Dal Potato Curry.
Ingredients for RONTOSE / Rice Flour Puri:
Rice flour. -1 cup
Hot water. -1 cup
Oil. -1 tsp
Salt. - to taste.

Ingredients for DALI THOY / Dal Potato Curry :
Toor dal. -1 cup
Potato. -1 big
Turmeric powder. -1/4 tsp
Green chillies. -3
Salt. -to taste
For Seasoning Dali Thoy:-
Potato. -1 big

Coconut oil / Oil. -2 tsp
Mustard seeds. -1tsp
Cumin seeds. -1/2 tsp

Method For RONTOSE / RICE POORI / RICE PURI
1). In a wide mixing bowl add 1cup rice flour and add required salt and mix well.

2). Add 1cup hot boiled water slowly and mix with the rice flour little by little using a spoon.
3). Add 1tsp oil and mix the rice flour with your hands to make a soft dough.
4). Apply little oil on your palms and make small lemon size balls of rice dough and keep aside on a plate for 30 minutes.
5). Keep one plastic sheet on a chapati rolling stone /chapati board and apply little oil on it.
6). Keep one rice dough ball in the middle of the plastic sheet .
7). Apply little oil on another plastic sheet and keep it over the rice dough ball.
8). Keep a flat bottom steel plate over the second plastic sheet.
9). Press the middle of the steel plate with your hands to flatten the rice dough ball in between plastic sheets to make a medium thin puri shape.
10). Remove the platic sheet from the top of the flattened rice puri.
11). Heat oil in a deep frying pan and slowly drop the flattened rice flour puri into the hot oil. Deep fry
and cook the rice flour puri in hot oil on both sides till crisp and little golden colour.
12). Remove the deep fried rice flour puri / Rontose from hot oil with a puri strainer or slotted spoon.
13). Transfer the deep fried rice flour Puri /rontose on a plate.
Rontose / Rice flour Puri is ready.
Rontose and Dali Thoy / Rice Flour Puri with Potato Dal Curry is ready to serve.
Method For DALI THOY / Potato Toor Dal Curry
Peel the skin,wash and chop 1 big potato into small cubes. Wash and half slit 3 green chillies lengthwise. Pressure cook 1 cup toor dal and chopped potatoes with half slit green chillies and 1/4 tsp turmeric powder for 4 whistles or till soft and keep aside.
In a cooking vessel add the pressure cooked toor dal potato green chilly mixture and boil for 2 minutes. Add required salt and mix well. Boil the curry for few minutes and switch off the flame.Heat coconut oil or cooking oil in a small pan for seasoning. Splutter mustard seeds and cumin seeds (jeera) and saute well. Add 2 dry red chilly broken into pieces and 1 sprig curry leaves into the pan and fry in oil for a few seconds and switch off the flame. Pour the mustard seasoning into the potato toor dal curry /dali thoy in the cooking vessel and mix well. Dali Thoy / Potato Toor Dal Curry is ready.
