Chemba Puttu and Cherupayar curry.

Chemba Puttu is a popular breakfast dish in Kerala made in a cylindrical shape puttu maker using chemba puttu powder / brown rice powder and can be served along with Kerala style cherupayar curry. Kerala style Chemba Puttu and Cherupayar Curry recipe is given below with ingredients, instructions and method.

Chemba Puttu Recipe

The following ingredients are needed to prepare Chemba Puttu.

Ingredients:-

Chemba Puttu powder.-1cup
Hot water.                    -3/4 to 1 cup
Grated coconut.           -1/2 cup
Salt.                             -1/4 tsp

Instructions:-

In a mixing bowl add chemba puttu powder and salt and mix well. Add required amount of hot water little by little over the puttu powder.Mix well until the prepared puttu powder holds its shape when you press it in your palm and when you crush, it becomes free flowing like bread crumbs.

Method:-

1). Take a cylindrical puttu maker and put the perforated small round disc inside the puttu maker.

2). Add 2tbsp grated coconut over the round disc inside the puttu maker to cover the holes.

3). Then fill the wet and free flowing prepared puttu powder inside the puttu maker. Add 1tbsp grated coconut on the top and cover the puttu maker with its lid.

4). Boil sufficient water in a pressure cooker and cover the cooker with its lid and without putting whistle.When the steam starts to come from the pressure cooker, place the puttu maker over the cooker top.

5).Then the steam starts to come from the holes of the puttu maker lid. Steam cook the chemba puttu for 6 minutes on medium flame.

6). Remove the puttu maker from the cooker top. Hold the puttu maker parallel to a serving plate. Insert a round long stick in the hole on the bottom portion of the puttu maker and push it to slide the puttu on the serving plate.Chemba Puttu is ready.

Cherupayar Curry Recipe.

Cherupayar curry is made with green gram,The following ingredients are needed to prepare Cherupayar Curry.

Ingredients:-

Green gram.          -1cup
Potato.                   -1medium size
Green chilly.          -1
Garlic.                    -2 cloves
Red chilli powder. -1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder.  -1/4 tsp
Salt.                       - to taste

For grinding Coconut Masala Paste:-

Grated coconut.-1cup
Green chillies . -3
Cumin seeds.   -1/2 tsp

For Seasoning:-

Mustard seeds.    -1tsp
Dry Red chillies. -2
Shallots.              -6
Garlic.                 -3 cloves
Curry leaves.      -1sprig

Instructions:-

1). Wash and soak green gram /cherupayar in water for 8 hours or overnight.

2). Peel, wash and chop potatoes into small cubes. Pressure cook the potato cubes along with soaked green gram,1green chilly 2 garlic,1/4 tsp turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp red chilly powder and sufficient water for 3 whistles and keep aside the cooked potato and green gram.

3). Grind grated coconut, cumin seeds, 2 green chillies to a fine paste and keep aside the ground coconut masala paste,.

Method:-

1). In a wide bottom pan add the cooked potato and green gram, required salt and 1 and 1/2 cup of water and boil on low flame.

2). Add ground coconut masala paste and 1 cup of water into the pan and mix with the cooked green gram and potato mixture. The curry will thicken as it cools. Add required water and adjust the consistency. Boil for 3 to 4 minutes on low flame or until raw smell of the masala goes out. Saute well in between. Switch off the flame.

3). Heat oil in a small pan for seasoning and splutter mustard seeds. Add broken dry red chilly pieces and curry leaves into the pan and fry in oil for a second. Add  chopped garlic and shallots into the pan and saute well till garlic and shallots becomes light brown. Switch of the flame.

4). Pour the seasoning into the curry in the pan and mix well.Transfer the curry to a serving bowl.Cherupayar curry is ready.

Very tasty and healthy Kerala style Chemba Puttu and Cherupayar Curry is ready to serve.
