GABBYA DHAVAE POLTHE / Banana Stem Raitha without Onion / Banana Pith Salad

Banana stem/Banana Pith is called Gabbo in Konkani. The inner most part of the Banana stem is called Banana Pith or Gabbo.

Konkani people prepare several delicious dishes using fresh tender Gabbo [Banana Pith].The recipe is of GSB Kochi side.Gabbya Dhave Polthe is a curd based Raita made from Banana stem/pith and is served as a side dish with Rice.This dish is prepared in  Kochi GSB homes.This is a no Onion no Garlic Recipe.

Banana stem is a rich source of fibre and also has many other medicinal and nutritional benefits.This recipe is a healthy option to incorporate fibre in your daily life. Gabbo is an excellent cleanser of your entire digestive system.You can use any cooking oil for seasoning.But seasoning in Coconut oil makes the dish tasty and delicious.
This dish is simple,quick and easy to prepare which does not need any grinding.

The following ingredients are needed to prepare this delicious Gabbya Dhavae Polthe.

Ingredients:-

Tender Gabbo. -1 small Banana stem /pith
Green chillies. -3
Salt.                 -to taste
Curd.               -2 cup

For Seasoning :-


Coconut Oil.    -1tsp
Mustard seeds. -1tsp
Jeera.                -1/2tsp
Curry leaves.    -1 spring

Instructions:-


1. Clean a small tender Banana stem/Banana Pith/Gabbo.


2. With a sharp kitchen knife chop a small tender Gabbo  (Banana pith) into thin roundels.Remove and discard the strings of fibre (net like fibre) between each Gabbya roundels by rolling them around your finger when you chop the roundels.

 Put the sliced Gabbo roundels in Water for few minutes to prevent discolouring.


3. Remove from water and chop the thin Gabbo roundels together into very small square pieces.Keep aside.


4. Wash and chop 3 Green chillies into very thin roundels.Crush the Green chilly slices with Salt thoroughly using your finger tips.Keep aside.


Method :-


In a mixing bowl put the chopped Gabbo /Banana stem pieces and add the thoroughly crushed and mixed Green chilly& Salt mixture and mix well.Keep aside for 1 minute.

Add 1cup thick Curd into the mixing bowl and mix well with the chopped Gabbo/Banana stem pieces and Green chilly Salt mixture.

Heat 1tsp Coconut Oil in a pan and splutter Mustard Seeds.Add  Curry leaves and saute well and fry for a second.Switch off the flame.

Pour the above seasoning into the Gabbo, Green chilly &Salt  mixture in the mixing bowl.

A tasty fresh and crunchy Gabbya Dhavae Polthe/Banana Stem Raita without Onion is ready to serve as a side dish with Rice.
