YELLOW CUCUMBER CURRY /MAGGE KODDEL / Vellarikka Curry

Yellow Cucumber / Kani Vallari in Malayalam/is called Mogga/ Magge in Konkani.
Magge Koddel is a traditional Mangalore GSB, North Canara GSB  and Goan GSB Konkani Communities favourite dish.Mangalore side Konkanis love Garlic seasoning .They seasoned this Curry with crushed 8 to 10 Garlic flakes alone fried in Coconut Oil till golden colour to get the best aroma to the curry.

Kochi side GSB  people donot like Garlic seasoning. They can use normal seasoning of Mustard and Curry leaves to this recipe instead of Garlic.I used Mustard seeds,Curry leaves and few crushed Garlic in this recipe for seasoning of this Curry.

This Cucumber is mostly used in Mangalore  Konkanis for various recipes.So it is called Mangalore Cucumber in Karnataka.This Cucumber is also available in Kerala which is one of the main vegetable placed near the Sreekrishna Idol for viewing the early morning Vishu kani (view) on the Hindu religious festival day of Vishu in Kerala.So this Cucumber is called Kani vellari in Kerala.We can make varities of dishes with this Yellow Cucuber/Magge/Vellarikka.


Mangalore Cucumber/Kani Vellarikka/



The following ingredients are needed to prepare this delecious Magge Koddel/Yellow Cucumber Curry.

Ingredients:-


Yellow Cucumber :-1 firm
Salt.                        -as per taste



For grinding Coconut Masala :-


Coconut grated .      -1 cup
Roasted Red chilly. -6
Tamarind.                -a small size.


For Seasoning :-
Coconut oil/Oil.  -1tsp
Mustard.             -1tsp
Curry leaves.      -1spring
Garlic crushed.   - 4 



Instructions:-

Wash, clean and chop a firm and fresh Yellow Cucumber into large square pieces with skin.Keep aside.


Slightly crush Garlic and keep aside.


Roast 6 dry Red chillies in little oil and keep aside.

Grind the roasted Red chillies, grated Coconut and a small piece of Tamarind into a smooth paste adding little Water.Keep aside.



Method :-


Boil 1cup of Water in a vessel and add the chopped Yellow Cucumber pieces.Add Salt and mix well
.Cover the vessel with a lid and cook the Yellow cucumber pieces till soft


Add the ground Coconut Masala paste to the cooked Yellow Cucumber pieces in the vessel.Mix 
well and boil for 2 minutes. Check Salt and adjust  the Saltif needed.

The consistency of the dish is semi thick.Add Water according to the consistency you prefer and switch off the flame.

Heat Coconut oil/Oil in a pan and splutter Mustard seeds and fry the Curry leaves. Add crushed Garlic and fry till turns golden colour and then switch off the flame.


Pour this seasoning over the Magge Kodde /l Yellow Cucumber Curry in the vessel


A very tasty and yummy Yellow Cucumber Curry is ready to serve with Rice.
