Colocasia root is called Mande in Konkani.Alvamande Sassam is a Colocasia curry cooked in Coconut Mustard Masala paste and goes well as a side dish with Rice.
The following ingredients are needed to prepare Alvamande Sassam.
Ingredients:-
Colocasia root (Mande) - 6
Coconut grated. -1 cup
Red chilly. -3 or 4
Tamarind. -a small piece
Mustard seeds. -1/2 tsp
Salt. -to taste
Instructions:-
Peel the outer skin of Colocasia root and wash in water thoroughly. Chop the Colocasia roots into 1inch lengthy pieces.
Pressure cook the chopped Colocasia root pieces for 1whistle adding required water and keep aside.
Grind Coconut gratings along with Red chillies, Tamarind and raw Mustard seeds to a smooth paste adding very little water and keep aside the ground Coconut masala paste.
Method:-
Transfer the cooked Colocasia pieces into a cooking pan.
Add the ground Coconut masala paste along with required Salt and little water into the cooking pan. Mix well and make a semi thick gravy consistency.
Boil and cook for 5 minutes on low flame and switch off the flame.
A tasty Alvamande Sassam is ready to serve as a side dish with Rice.
