The following ingredients are needed to prepare Surna Elchikeri /Yam Banana Curry
Ingredients:-
Yam (Surnu). -250 gm
Raw Banana. -1
Toor dal. -3/4 cup
Dry Mango. -a small piece or Darmbya sol (Kudampuli)
Salt. -to taste
For grinding the Coconut Masala paste:-
Grated Coconut. -1cup
Dry Red chillies. -5
Turmeric powder. -1/4tsp
For Seasoning:-
Coconut oil. -1tsp
Mustard seeds. -1tsp
Cumin seeds. -1/2tsp
Curry leaves. -1spring
For roasting the grated Coconut:-
Coconut oil. -1/2tsp
Grated Coconut. -2tbsp
Instructions:-
Remove the outer skin and chop the Yam into small medium pieces.Wash and keep aside.
Cut both the ends of the raw Bananas and chop vertically into 4 pieces and again chop into small pieces horizontally.Wash and keep aside the raw Banana pieces.
Wash and pressure cook Toordal and chopped Yam pieces adding 2 cup of Water for 2 whisles and keep aside.
Grind the grated Coconut, dry Red Chillies and Turmeric powder to a smooth paste adding little water and keep aside.
Method:-
In a cooking vessel add the chopped raw Banana pieces and 1cup of Water.Boil and cook the raw Banana pieces till soft but not mushy.
Add the cooked Toor dal and cooked Yam pieces along with cooked water into the cooking vessel.
Add required Salt and a small piece of dry Mango or Darmbya sol (Kudampuli) and mix with the cooked Banana and Yam pieces. Boil for 2 minutes.
Add the ground Coconut Masala Paste and mix well. Boil for few minutes and switch off the flame.
Heat 1tsp oil in a pan and splutter Mustard seeds and Cumin seeds and saute well. Add Curry leaves and fry well. Switch off the flame.
Add the above seasoning into the Curry in the cooking vessel.
Heat 1/2tsp oil in the same pan and roast the Coconut gratings till golden brown colour and switch off the flame.
Add the roasted Coconut grating over the Curry in the cooking vessel and mix well.
A tasty Surna Elchikery/ Yam Raw Banana Curry is ready to serve with Rice.
