Kulitha Koddel (Konkani Recipe) / Horse Gram Drumstick Curry.


Kulitha Koddel is a Konkani style coconut based Horse gram curry adding Drumstick pieces and Garlic seasoning. A very tasty and delicious Horse gram curry goes well with rice. Garlic seasoning in coconut oil makes the curry more tasty. You can add mustard and curry leaves seasoning into the Kulitha Koddel /Horse gram curry instead of garlic seasoning. A detailed recipe and step by step method with photos.

The following ingredients are needed to prepare Kulitha Koddel / Horse gram Drumstick Curry.

Ingredients:-

Horse gram (Kulithu) -3/4 cup
Drumstick.                  -2
Salt.                            - to taste

For grinding Coconut Masala paste:-

Grated Coconut. -1 cup
Dry Red chillies. -5
Tamarind.           - a marble size.

For Seasoning:-

Coconut oil. - 1tsp
Garlic.          - 8 or 10 cloves

Instructions:-

1. Wash the Horse gram (Kulithu) and remove the impurities and soak overnight or for 8 hours in water. Pressure cook the soaked Horse gram adding required water for 8 whistles on medium flame. Keep aside.

2. Remove the outer fiber like skin of the Drumstick and chop into 1 and 1/2 inch lengthy pieces. Wash well and keep aside.

3. Roast dry Red chillies in little oil. Grind the grated Coconut along with roasted Red chillies and Tamarind to a smooth paste. Keep aside the ground Coconut Masala paste.

4. Slightly crush Garlic with or without skin and keep aside.

Method:-

1. In a wide bottom pan add the chopped Drumstick pieces and 2 cup of water. Boil and cook till the Drumstick pieces become soft.

2. Add cooked Horse gram (Kulithu) along with cooked water into the pan.

3. Add required Salt into the pan and miix well. Cover and cook for 2 minutes on low flame

4. Add the ground Coconut Masala paste into the pan.


5. Mix the ground Masala with the cooked Horse gram and Drumstick pieces.

6. Boil and cook for 2 minutes on low flame and switch of the flame.

7. Heat Coconut oil in a pan for seasoning. Add the slightly crushed Garlic and fry in oil till light brown in colour. Switch off the flame.

8. Pour the above seasoning into the Horse gram Drumstic Curry in the pan.

9. Transfer the Kulitha Koddel / Horse gram Drumstick Curry to a serving bowl.


A very tasty and delicious Kulitha Koddel is ready to serve with rice.
