Achinga Payar Theeyal / Long Yard Beans Theeyal


Achinga Payar Theeyal is a delicious gravy based Kerala dish prepared with long yard beans cooked in roasted coconut and spice masala mixture and goes well with rice.A very tasty and easy to make spicy, little sweet and sour Achinga Payar Theeyal recipe is explained with step by step method and photos.

The following ingredients are needed to prepare Achinga Payar Theeyal / Long Yard Beans Theeyal.

Ingredients:-

Long Yard Beans (Achinga). - 2 cup chopped
Onion.                       -1 big
Green chillies.           - 5
Tamarin                    - a gooseberry size
Sugar.                       - 1/2tsp
Salt.                         - to taste

For grinding Coconut Masala paste:-

Grated Coconut.     - 1 and 1/2 cup
Red Chilly powder. - 1tsp
Coriander powder.   - 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder.    - 1/2 tsp

For Seasoning:-

Coconut oil.         - 1tsp
Mustard seeds.     -1tsp
Methi seeds.         -1/4tsp
Dry Red chillies.  - 2
Curry leaves.        -1spring

Instructions:-

1). Wash Long Yard Beans (Achinga) in water and chop into 1 inch long slices and keep aside.

2). Peel, wash and chop Onion into thin long slices and keep aside.

3). Wash the Green chillies and slit at one end and keep aside.

4). Heat a pan and dry roast freshly grated Coconut till golden brown colour. Grind the roasted Coconut along with Red chilly powder, Turmeric powder and Coriander powder to a very fine paste adding very little water. Keep aside the ground Coconut Masala paste.

5) Soak Tamarind in 1 cup of water for 5 minutes. Squeeze and take the Tamarind juice and keep aside.

Method:-

1). In a wide bottom pan add 1cup of Tamarind water and add required Salt. Mix well and boil the Tamarind water.


2). Add chopped Long Yard beans into the pan. Mix well and boil on low flame..

3). Add Green chillies and Onion slices and mix well.


4). Close the Pan with a lid and cook for 3 minutes on low flame 

5). Open the lid and add the ground Coconut Masala paste.

6). Mix the ground Masala paste adding 2 cup of water and boil till the gravy starts thickening.

7). Add 1/2 tsp Sugar and mix with all the ingredients in the pan. Switch off the flame. 

8). Heat Coconut oil in a small pan for seasoning and splutter Mustard seeds and Methi seeds and saute well. Add broken dry Red chilly pieces and Curry leaves into the pan and fry well. Switch off the flame.


9). Pour the above seasoning into the gravy in the wide bottom pan and mix well.

10). Transfer the Achinga Payar Theeyal to a serving bowl.

Achinga Payar Theeyal / Long Yard Beans Theeyal is ready to serve with rice.
