Godi Surnali / Sweet and Spongy Surnali Dosa (Konkani Recipe)


Surnali /Sweet Surnali Dosa / Godi Surnali is a traditional GSB Konkani style sweet and spongy pancake made with raw rice, beaten rice and fenugreek seeds soaked in curd adding jaggery and coconut. Surnali is a popular breakfast dish in Konkani communities during Tulsi pooja day. Godi Surnali recipe is explained with step by step method and photos.

The following ingredients are needed to prepare Godi Surnali / Sweet and spongy Surnali Dosa.

Ingredients:-

Raw Rice.             - 2 cup
Beaten rice.          -1 cup (thick poha)
Fenugreek seeds.  -1/2 tsp (methi seeds)
Curd.                    -1 and 1/2 cup
Water.                   -1 and 1/2 cup
Grated coconut.    -1 and 1/2 cup
Jaggery grated.     -1/2 cup or 3/4 cup
Turmeric powder. -1/4tsp
Cardamom.           - 4 or 5
Salt.                       -1tsp
Ghee.                     -2tbsp

Instructions:-

1). In a vessel soak raw rice, beaten rice (thick poha) and fenugreek seeds (methi seeds) in 1 and 1/2 cup of curd. Add 1and 1/2 cup of water into the vessel and soak all the ingredients together for 5 hours.


2). Grind the soaked rice, poha, methi seeds and soaked curd and water along with grated coconut jaggery, turmeric powder and peeled cadamom to a smooth and thick batter of pouring consistency.


3). Transfer the ground batter to a vessel. Add salt into the batter and mix well. Keep aside the ground batter to ferment for 8 to 12 hours.

Method:-

1). Heat a non stick dosa tawa on medium heat and apply little ghee on hot tawa. Mix the fermented batter with a ladle and take a ladle of batter.

2). Pour the batter on hot tawa and do not spread the batter using back of the ladle. Just turn the tawa in a circular motion to spread the batter on tawa by itself and to get a round shape thick dosa.

3). Cover the dosa with a lid and cook on one side of the dosa on medium low flame.

4). Open the lid and spread little ghee around the sides and on the dosa. 


5). Small holes will appear on the dosa. Cook well till base of the dosa becomes golden brown colour. No need to flip the dosa. 


6). Remove the well roasted soft dosa from hot tawa with a flat spatula to a plate.

7). Make sweet surnali dosas with the remaining batter and transfer to a serving plate. Godi Surnali /Sweet and Spongy Surnali Dosa is ready to serve hot with butter.
