Kulitha Idly/Horse Gram Idly

Kulitha idli / Horse gram idli is a breakfast dish made with horse gram /kulithu and rice.Horse gram idli can be served with coconut chutney. Kulitha idly /Horse gram idly recipe is given below with step by step photos.

The following ingredients are needed to prepare Kulitha idly / Horse gram Idly.

Ingredients:-

Horse gram/ Kulithu. - 1 cup
Idly rice or Raw rice. - 3 cup
Salt.                             - to taste
Water.                          - as required

Instructions:-

1). Take 1 cup horse gram/ kulithu and soak in water for 5 hours.


2). Take 3 cup of idli rice or raw rice and soak in water for 5 hours.

3). Grind soaked horse gram / kulithu to a smooth and thick paste adding required water (grinder preferred) and transfer it into a bowl.Grind the soaked rice to a smooth paste adding required water and transfer the rice batter into the same bowl.Add required salt into the batter and mix both the batters in the bowl together using your hand.

4). Keep aside the batter to ferment for 8 hours or overnight.The batter would have risen.

Method:-

1). Mix the fermented batter with a ladle. Grease the idli moulds with little oil. Pour the batter on greased idli moulds and keep the moulds on its stand.

2). Boil sufficient water in a steamer. Place the stand with idli moulds in the steamer and steam cook the idlis for 10 minutes. Then take out the stand with idli moulds from the steamer.

3). Remove the idli moulds from its stand and allow the steamed horse gram idlis to cool.

4). Once cooled demould the horse gram idlis and transfer to a plate.

Kulitha idly / Horse Gram Idly is ready to serve hot with chutney.
