Kala Chana Masala Gravy is a very tasty and delicious black chickpeas curry made with black chickpeas and goes well with rice, roti, chapathi, phulkas, appam, Idiyappam or puttu.

The following ingredients are needed to prepare Kala Chana Masala Gravy / Black Chickpeas Masala Gravy
Ingredients:-
Black Chickpeas. -1cup
Salt. -to taste
For Grinding the Coconut Masala Paste:-
Grated Coconut. -1cup
Red chilly powder. -1tsp
Coriander powder. -2tsp
Turmeric powder. -1/4tsp
Garam Masala Powder. -3/4tsp
For Seasoning:-
Coconut oil. -1tsp
Mustard seeds. -1tsp
Curry leaves. -1 spring
Instructions:-
1. Wash and soak black chickpeas in water overnight or for 8 hours.Pressure cook the soaked chickpeas adding required water and salt for 3 whistles on medium flame. Keep aside.
2. Heat 2tsp coconut oil in a pan and add chopped shallots, garlic and ginger. Saute well till the shallot pieces become translucent.Add grated coconut and roast well until golden brown colour.
Lower the flame and add red chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and garam masala powder. Saute well and switch of the flame. Allow all the roasted ingredients to cool.
3. Grind all the roasted ingredients to a smooth paste adding 2 tbsp of water. Keep aside the ground coconut masala paste.
Method:-
1. In a cooking vessel add the cooked chickpeas.
2. Add the ground coconut masala paste and mix with the cooked chickpeas.
3. Add required salt and required water and boil well. Cover and cook for 2 minutes on low flame. Saute well and switch off the flame.
4. Heat coconut oil in a pan for seasoning. Splutter mustard seeds and saute well. Add curry leaves and fry well. Switch off the flame.
5. Add the above seasoning into the chana masala gravy in the cooking vessel .
6. Transfer the chana masala gravy / chickpeas masala gravy to a serving bowl.
A very tasty and yummy Kala Chana Masala Gravy /Black Chickpeas Masala Gravy is ready to serve as a side dish with hot steaming Rice, Puttu, Chapathi, Phulkas, Idiyappam, Roti or Appam .
